The Creation of New Software
I've been working on the Prowler II Project for quite some time. After some years of desiring to do this, I find myself extremely close to finishing this long-time goal by spending much of my time this summer indoors sitting at my computer. But it has proven to be a positive and progressive thing, and I'm impressing myself with what I've been able to do with what little knowledge I'd been able to acquire, mostly on my own through various means.
I expand and tweak the code on a daily basis. I can see where the problem arises when a programmer is about to release software. You know you can continually make it even better. A quick tweak here, an additional feature there... but then, this is what future upgraded versions are for. So it comes down to being aware that it shall ALWAYS be a work in progress. Besides, I've already created something that has its' distinguishing aspects which will set it apart and, hopefully, in opinion and preference, to the myriad of other programs in the same category. I can't wait to show it off to my classmates when I start my 2nd semester for Web Programming.
Catman and I have been testing in Alpha stage for several builds, one of which was a MAJOR rework of code from almost scratch, but was necessary. (Personally, I think Catman was speechless from the major enhancements made LOL!) But I am now pushing for Beta testing in order to have it fully released before 2nd semester classes start. Since most all of the initial testing has been done in Alpha, we're looking at a short Beta-Test period with 1 or 2 possible Beta revisions.
There had been days where a problem would cease advancing in coding, as there is a myriad of unusable information cluttering the resources on the internet, and I began to wonder if I would get this project off the ground at all this year, let alone before classes start again. But when the major ones were worked through how joyous it was, indeed! I had wrestled with the code and came out victorious thanks to a little help from various sources. And today here I am typing this out using my newest, greatest project online thus far.
No more bringing up numerous new windows with Internet Explorer/FireFox and various Notepad/Wordpad instances, which took up more resources on a computer, No more switching back and forth between browser and editor. No more clicking back and forth to copy from one website to another. It will increase my online productivity greatly, being able to do more in less time while being more computer-resource friendly. And I know for a fact other people will also find it just as useful, so I am really looking forward to sharing it with the world.
Bloggers, Social-Networkers, Programmers and even Gamers will find using it to thier advantage. But first I need to finish the coding and prepare it for beta testing! I'd been offering a free 1-time offer to get a personalized version just for testing, but am a bit disappointed by the results. But no matter, it means less work on me LOL and I'll be in there beta testing myself to assure the job gets done quickly. I am sure there will be a much higher response when it becomes available and has been finished when people see they can get it for free after reading about the features.
But you're here reading this now, so why not sign up to Beta test? Just visit www.knotalone.com and take a second to add your Email Address to this very short list. That is, IF it's before August 15th 2010, of course! The sooner the better, as delaying may mean missing out. If it's the 15th it is likely already over, but still worth checking on. Anyway...
Making this Split-Panel Dual Web-Browser with built-in Editor and 1-Click ScreenShot was NOT easy. There were limitations to enhance that are inherent in the VB WebBrowser control, annoying DING sounds to capture and disable and other little complications to deal with that I hadn't expected when starting out on this project. But along the way I'd learned alot of things I hadn't known about previously, and as a result, this experience will lead to more advanced knowledge I will be using in any future projects. So although it was challenging, and at times frustrating, it was an experience to be sure and a positive one at that!
What's next? Well, after I tweak the code, make backups and streamline it for Beta-Testing, I'll be creating the Installer for it, which is in itself another challenge as I've done this only a few times, but foresee no complications since it seemed to work fine thanks to a tutorial I'd found online. During Beta testing we will also be tweaking the online content that is embedded which accesses our website such as the Prowler Homepage. Then you should see an announcement that it's released and ready for use!
