Cricket Wireless will sell the service and their USB modem despite the unavailability of service in your area. However, if you can get a bar or two of signal, then it's possible to get the service working even if Tech Support says it isn't possible! Here's how...

First of all, you may need to use or borrow a laptop in order to 'activate' the modem. It needs a pretty strong signal in order to accomplish the feat of activation. Or, you may use a friends PC if they live close enough to the tower. Whatever it takes, just get it activated. You only need to do this once.

After activation is complete, you'll need to do one more thing. If you don't, you will find yourself having lulls in data trancieving and things will hang for long periods of time. After some researching, I was VERY lucky and found this little known trick. The connection will stay active, not go 'dormant' with nothing happening, and allow data to flow much more fluidly and constant. And by the way, this is for the Cricket modem Model A600.

Step 1: Press Control-D

 __Cricket-Password
Step 2: Enter the password: ##ftm*
Click OK, the "Hidden Menu" appears...

Step 3: Click on SETTINGS
Step 4: Choose HDR option
Step 5: Click Apply/Close/X

The modem will restart itself and re-initialize. Once it does, you can connect as usual. BAM! You've got wireless!! I hope!!! It depends on your geography and the placement of the transitting tower as well as where you happen to be. Line of sight, that's the way it works. So try and be on a hill if possible. :)

Addendum: Since this article has made a thousand hits I decided to expand the information by what more I have learned and experienced with this Cricket modem...

USB 'Y' CABLE: There is a USB Cable that was included with this modem that is more of a 'Y'-type connecting cable. You can use this cable for two reasons...

1. Extend the Modem so it can located for better reception

2. Increasing the operating power of the transiever

The first method of being able to move the modem on the extended cable is most common and the first thing to try. If you still cannot get a good signal, then plug BOTH Male ends into different USB ports on your PC to increase the power the modem is getting for a more powerful reception and trasnmission. It boosts the power but is not advised by support to be used constantly. (It does get warm to the touch after long use.)

It is also noteworthy that these modems can go out and cause problems from simply not initializing to preventing a PC from booting up. (I know this personally.) The best procedure to follow is to simply unplug the modem before powering on your PC or bringing it back from a sleep state. There may be a need to manually initialize the modem by clicking on 'Options' and choosing 'Find Device' after you plug it back in.

Connection still dropping or is slow? Try moving the modem to get a better signal. Then try enabling NDIS, which is an 'always on' connection that simulates more of a broadband rather than dial-up mode. Although a few more hoops to jump through, it will help get a less-frustrating and more stable connection.

First you need to be connected! Then click on 'Options' then 'Preferences' which bring up the following window:

 __Cricket-Prefs-General

Click the WWAN Tab up top. You'll then see these options appear...

 __Cricket-Prefs-WWAN

CHECK the Checkbox for 'Enable NDIS' then click OK. A confirmation dialog will then appear...

__Cricket-Prefs-WWAN-NDIS-Dialog

Click on OK again and the modem will re-initialize, which takes a couple of minutes to do sometimes so BE PATIENT as it may pause a few moments on you. At this point, you SHOULD be able to surf and owrk online with no problems in connectivity unless the actual signal changes. Incidentally this is also useful for times using a Laptop in a different or more remote location.

You COULD use this setting indefinately, however it is not advised to keep it on NDIS. So alternate here and there, and use your judgement on when to use the more conventient NDIS setting depending on connectivity and location. Hope this has helped!!
